    Description

1940's MATL Matilde Poulat Sterling TURQUOISE AMETHYST Cross Pendant Necklace *Possibly the most influential artist and designer of the Mexican Jewelry Renaissance, Matilde Poulat (MATL) was inspired by the discovery of 1932 in Oaxaca of pre-hispanic gold and silver jewelry and by Mexican folk art. Offered this week is a rare and beautiful, ornately jeweled and elaborately decorated sculptural cross pendant necklace. Two carved silver birds sit atop an exquisite artwork of purple amethyst and turquoise stones. A carved pyramidal amethyst at the very center is surrounded by tiny round channel set turquoise stones, as are four oval amethysts at east, west, north and south, all framed with silver wire scrollwork. The pendant is suspended by a sterling silver filigree chain necklace measuring 16", and can be worn with any of your favorite chains. Poulat's signature designs received international acclaim in 1941, when she participated in an exhbit of Latin American silver at the Pan American Union in Washington D.C. Poulat designed, but did not personally create every piece, nor did she personally sign them. Her workshop was small, and to satisfy the demand for her art, she contracted with other artists. Foremost was her friend, the brilliant artist Gustavo Martinez, famous in his own right, who helped to produce her art. I personally have MATL jewelry, identically produced both by her workshop artists and by Martinez. This pendant is unsigned, as are many of these early 40's pieces. It is an exquisite original MATL, possibly created by Martinez. Shown in last 2 photos with matching MATL ring, which is available on another of my current auctions. This auction is for the Pendant Necklace Only. Measurements Pendant:3" x 2-1/8" Weight: 26.8 grams The condition is excellent, all stones are original and intact. No damage noted. A museum worth piece, reflecting the very best of collectible ethnic fine vintage jewelry art. I do not accept returns, unless I've made an unintentional error in description. I describe everything to the best of my ability and point out any flaws. Please look at all the photos and ask any questions before bidding. I want you to be happy with your purchase. Insured Domestic Shipping is FREE. Inquire for International. I list more unique and beautiful Native American and ethnic jewelry throughout the wee, so please take a minute and have a look to see what turns up ....Thanks for stopping by.....
