    Description

This is a beautiful and old Easter Island Moai Kavakava wood figure made for the early 20th century curio market.
These good early 20th cent curio pieces are becoming quite collectible!
The gifted indigenous Easter Island creator of this specimen must've been an immediate descendent of some 19th century master craftsman. He did a fantastic job in emulating the classic style of the earlier examples - look at the ribs!!! ....   even has the ankle protuberances!   and other features too; a hole at the back of the neck. Superb attention to detail/form - that traditional hauntingly beautiful / emaciated look and forward leaning stance; birdmen design on head...a fine goatee.....phallus....etc..etc
It used to have inset bne and obsidian eyes - now lost. Not important though, as this figure is just great in its ASIS condition.
It's an old piece and has the usual old age related minor dents. chips, scratches, blemishes etc.. here and there. Overall, it is in very good and un-restored condition.
Photo #5 is a charming depiction of an Easter Island lad selling Moai Kavakava to a British captain - circa 1930s.
I believe this figure is of an earlier manufacture - (c 1910 -1920s).
The figure stands on a custom wooden base - but it can be detached.
    Measures 16 inches in length.
