    Description

Antique or vintage Latmul ceremonial mask identified as being from the Tambanum Village in the middle Sepik river region of Papua New Guinea.  16" tall and 4" wide with cowrie shell eyes.  Unknown age, we are selling for a 93 years young lady we helped move into assisted living and are downsizing her possessions.  She states this was purchased by her husband in the 1960's in New Guinea, but has no information on it's history prior to purchase.  Internet sites show similar masks accredited to this village stating Tambanum is well known for their wood carving.  Other similar masks from the Sepik region are sometimes referred to as mosquito or bird effigy masks because of the long proboscis (animal symbolism is discounted by some experts).  Believe to be an older carving as many sites indicate most more recent (last half of 20th century) masks tend to be more colorful and ornate.  From internet this would have been attached to larger headgear for ceremonial wear or used for spiritual protective or magical properties.  Thanks for looking!
