Flute Mask, Middle Rambu, Papua New Guinea.
These masks are attached as stoppers to the large ceremonial bamboo flutes that are kept in the men’s houses. The flutes are never taken out of the men’s house or seen by any man who has not been initiated. This one has two ancestor faces on it and is in the classic style for this village.
From what I’ve been told, these are a collection that came to America 25 to 30 years ago. I acquired them and bought the collection.
